At least 15 people were killed and 19 injured in Guatemala after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine on Thursday, authorities said, triggering a large-scale rescue effort in difficult terrain.
Deadly plunge
The bus was traveling along a highway when it veered off the road and fell into a deep ravine, according to emergency services. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, though officials said weather, road conditions, and mechanical failure were all being examined.
The impact left the vehicle severely damaged, complicating rescue efforts as responders worked to reach passengers trapped inside.
Rescue operation
Firefighters, police, and medical teams were deployed to the scene, using ropes and heavy equipment to access the wreckage. Survivors were pulled from the bus and transported to nearby hospitals, while search teams continued to look for additional victims.

Authorities said the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue and injuries are assessed.
Victims and response
Local officials expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said counseling and support services were being offered. The injured were reported to be in varying conditions, with several in critical care.
Images from the scene showed the bus lodged at the bottom of the ravine, surrounded by emergency crews working through debris.
Road safety concerns
Guatemala has a history of deadly road accidents, often linked to poor infrastructure, overcrowded vehicles, and limited enforcement of safety regulations. Such crashes frequently prompt renewed calls for stricter transport oversight and improved road conditions.
