New Delhi, November 11, 2025 – A powerful car explosion rocked the bustling area near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on the evening of November 10, killing at least nine people and injuring over 20 others in what authorities are treating as a potential terrorist attack. The blast occurred around 7 PM near the Lal Quila metro station in a densely populated part of Old Delhi, sending shockwaves through the capital and prompting immediate high alert status across major cities.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage captured the chaos, with a loud bang followed by panic as crowds fled the scene. A local vlogger, Deepak, who was filming nearby, recorded the immediate aftermath, showing confusion and distress among bystanders, though the explosion itself was not visible in the clip. Another video circulating on social media captured the blast, highlighting the intensity of the incident in India’s national capital.
Delhi Police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Act, indicating a strong suspicion of foul play. Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have been a ‘Fidayeen’ or suicide attack, possibly triggered by ammonium nitrate explosives. The vehicle involved was a Hyundai i20, and forensic teams are analyzing remnants at the site, which is now cordoned off, with National Security Guard (NSG) personnel assisting in the probe.
Sources indicate the blast could be linked to a recently busted terror module in Faridabad, with connections to radicalized individuals, including doctors and Pakistan-based handlers. One key suspect identified is Dr. Umar Muhammad, a senior resident at GMC Anantnag and current professor, whose photo has surfaced in connection with the case. The car’s original owner, Mohd Salman, rented a flat in the area from 2016 to 2020 but failed to transfer ownership, leading to questions about the vehicle’s current status. However, reports suggest the car was sold about a year and a half ago to a Hindu resident named Devender from Okhla, Delhi, complicating the ownership trail.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is chairing a high-level security meeting to review the situation, with CCTV footage showing the suspect’s i20 entering and exiting a nearby car park. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences via X, stating, “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest.” He has directed agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the NSG to ensure a thorough probe and enhanced security measures.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, including from spiritual leader Dhirendra Krishna Shastri of Bageshwar Dham, who called for the culprits to be hanged publicly. Residents in Chandni Chowk described the blast as feeling like a “mini-earthquake,” with shockwaves felt up to 3 km away, disrupting a busy evening of shopping.
As investigations continue, schools and colleges in Delhi-NCR remain open, but with heightened security protocols. Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that all angles, including external involvement, are being explored. This event echoes past attacks on the Red Fort, raising concerns about urban security in one of India’s most visited heritage sites.
Updates are ongoing as more details emerge from the multi-agency probe.
