MUSCAT — Three French tourists were killed after a boat capsized off the coast of Oman, authorities said, in a maritime accident that has prompted an investigation into safety conditions for tourist excursions in the region.
The incident occurred in coastal waters popular with visitors for sightseeing and recreational trips. Omani officials said the boat overturned during the outing, throwing passengers into the sea. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but three French nationals were later pronounced dead.
Oman’s authorities did not immediately release details about the size of the vessel or how many people were on board at the time of the accident. Other passengers were rescued and taken to safety, according to official statements.
The French foreign ministry confirmed the deaths and said it was in contact with Omani authorities and providing consular assistance to the victims’ families. French officials expressed condolences and said they were seeking further information about the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Local officials said an investigation was under way to determine what caused the boat to capsize. Factors such as weather conditions, sea state, vessel maintenance and passenger safety measures are expected to be examined as part of the inquiry. There was no immediate indication of foul play.
Oman, which lies along key shipping routes connecting the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, has become an increasingly popular destination for international tourists, drawn by its coastline, marine life and desert landscapes. Boat tours and fishing trips are common along the country’s shores, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Maritime accidents involving tourists are relatively rare in Oman, but authorities have previously urged operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations, including limits on passenger numbers and the use of life jackets.
The incident is likely to renew scrutiny of safety standards for tourist vessels operating in the region, as officials work to establish whether the accident was the result of human error, mechanical failure or environmental conditions.
