Israel has become the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, a landmark diplomatic move that could significantly alter regional politics in the Horn of Africa and deepen tensions with Somalia.
A historic recognition
In a statement released on Thursday, Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed it had extended official recognition to the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, which has operated as a de facto independent entity since breaking away from Somalia in 1991.
Despite maintaining its own government, security forces, and democratic elections, Somaliland has long struggled to gain international recognition, with most countries backing Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Somalia’s reaction
Somalia’s federal government swiftly condemned Israel’s decision, calling it a violation of international law and a direct challenge to Somalia’s sovereignty. Officials in Mogadishu reiterated that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and warned that the move could destabilize the region.
Somalia has historically opposed any recognition of Somaliland, arguing that it would encourage fragmentation and undermine state rebuilding efforts after decades of conflict.
Strategic implications
Analysts say Israel’s decision is likely driven by strategic considerations, including Somaliland’s location along the Gulf of Aden near vital shipping lanes linking the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The region has gained heightened importance amid growing competition over maritime security, trade routes, and military access in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland has previously sought closer ties with countries interested in port access and regional security cooperation.
Regional and international response
So far, no other country has announced plans to follow Israel’s lead. However, diplomats say the recognition could prompt renewed debate within African and Middle Eastern capitals about Somaliland’s status.
