Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire after weeks of deadly clashes along their disputed border, officials from both countries said, easing tensions that had threatened to spiral into a broader confrontation.
Ceasefire agreement
Military and government officials confirmed that the ceasefire came into effect following talks aimed at preventing further bloodshed. Both sides agreed to halt offensive operations and maintain their current positions while diplomatic and military channels continue discussions.
The agreement follows days of intensified fighting that left several people dead and forced civilians in border areas to flee their homes.
Weeks of clashes
The violence erupted amid renewed tensions over disputed stretches of the Thailand–Cambodia border, an area that has seen intermittent clashes for decades. Recent confrontations involved exchanges of gunfire and artillery, prompting concerns about miscalculation and escalation.
Local authorities on both sides reported damage to homes and infrastructure near the frontier, while security forces increased patrols and reinforcements.

Diplomatic efforts
The ceasefire was brokered after sustained diplomatic engagement, including military-to-military talks and appeals from regional partners for restraint. Analysts say the agreement reflects recognition by both governments that prolonged fighting risks destabilising border communities and undermining regional cooperation.
ASEAN members have repeatedly urged dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes between member states.
Fragile calm
Despite the agreement, officials cautioned that the situation remains fragile. Previous ceasefires have broken down in the past, and both sides said monitoring mechanisms would be critical to ensuring compliance.
Residents in border areas expressed cautious relief, though many remain wary about returning home until the truce holds.
Why it matters
The Thailand–Cambodia border dispute is one of Southeast Asia’s most sensitive flashpoints. A sustained ceasefire would help stabilise the region and reinforce diplomatic norms within ASEAN, while a breakdown could quickly reignite violence.
