WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Friday that no Arab or Israeli officials convinced him not to strike Iran and that the decision was entirely his own, citing what he described as Iran’s cancellation of hundreds of planned executions of protestors as a major factor.
At a White House press moment, Trump was asked if leaders from Arab states or Israel had persuaded him to abandon threats of military action against Tehran. He replied, “Nobody convinced me. I convinced myself,” before pointing to reports that over 800 scheduled hangings did not occur in Iran. “They didn’t hang anyone. They canceled the hangings,” he said, adding that this development “had a big impact.”
Context: U.S. Threats and Iran Crackdown
In recent days, Trump had warned Iran it could face serious consequences, including military action, if it continued to kill protestors arrested during a nationwide anti-government uprising. Tens of thousands of demonstrators were detained, and rights groups reported thousands of deaths in the crackdown.
Iran has not publicly confirmed plans to execute hundreds of detainees, and independent verification remains difficult due to restricted internet access inside the country. U.S. officials have taken Trump’s claims about executions at face value but have not released direct evidence confirming Iran’s cancellation of executions.
Trump also publicly thanked Iran’s leadership for what he described as halting executions of political prisoners, signaling a possible de-escalation in U.S. rhetoric and threats.
Foreign Influence and Allies
Earlier reports from regional diplomacy suggested that leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Gulf states, as well as Israeli officials, had warned Trump against offensive military strikes on Iran, citing risks of wider Middle East instability and retaliation. U.S. and foreign officials were said to have communicated such concerns directly or through intermediaries.
But Trump rejected the notion that those cautions alone swayed him. Instead, he framed the decision as a response to developments inside Iran that reduced the immediate justification he had cited for possible intervention.
Notes
Trump’s claim that “over 800 hangings” were scheduled and then canceled has not been independently verified by on-the-ground sources in Iran. • Reports of direct pressure from Arab or Israeli officials do exist in diplomatic reporting, but Trump disputes their influence on his decision — the truth may be a mix of both dynamics. Full diplomatic cables or official statements from foreign governments would clarify the extent of that influence. • The exact military options still being considered by the U.S. government remain unclear publicly.
